Book Review

Volume 102 • Number 1

January 2003

Philipp von Zesen. SŠmtliche Werke. Bd. XVII, 1 und Bd. XVII, 2. Heidnische Gottheiten. Herausgegeben von Ferdinand van Ingen. Berlin und New York: Walter de Gruyter, 1998-1999. Pp. 695 + 2. EUR 308; Pp. 330 + 2. EUR 158.

These two volumes, of which the first is the basic text and the second the index and commentary, represent a massive undertaking on the part of the editor. Of all the volumes in this edition of Zesen's collected works that have appeared to date, this would seem to have presented by far the greatest challenge to the editor. It is really an encyclopedia, a compendium of all that was known in the seventeenth century about the gods and goddesses of antiquity. The first edition appeared in 1688, and it was followed by a title-page edition in 1712. Although relatively unknown today, Zesen's work was, as van Ingen notes in the afterword "[b]is zum Erscheinen von Benjamin Hederichs Schul-Lexicon (1717, 1731) [. .
