Book Review

Volume 103 • Number 3

July 2004

Studies in the History of the English Language: A Millennial Perspective. Edited by Donka Minkova and Robert Stockwell. Berlin and New York: Mouton de Gruyter, 2002. Pp. vi + 496. $108.

The papers collected in this volume were originally given at the inaugural conference on Studies in the History of the English Language, which took place in 2000 at UCLA. Since then, a second such conference took place at the University of Washington in 2002, and a third will be hosted by the University of Michigan in 2004. Underlying all of these endeavors is the conviction that "the study of the history of English is central to the interpretation of our cultural and literary heritage" (p. 1).
