Book Review

Volume 103 • Number 3

July 2004

Juden in der deutschen Literatur des Mittelalters. Religiöse Konzepte—Feindbilder—Rechtfertigungen. Herausgegeben von Ursula Schulze. Tübingen: Max Niemeyer, 2002. Pp. vi + 290. 21 plates. EUR 56 / SFR 92.

The essays originated in a Forschungskolloquium at the Freie Universität Berlin, led by the editor. The eleven essays are conceived as achieving some measure of "coverage" of the period from the mid-twelfth century up to the early sixteenth century—that is from the early stages of increased lay literary production in the vernacular into the era of the Reformation and the printed book. The essays generally attempt to present a comprehensive introduction to an analysis of the topic at hand, rather than assuming the reader's familiarity with the primary and secondary literature and then presenting a specialized new contribution to that literature. These are essays of basic information but are by no means at an introductory level.
