October 2004

Gestures and Looks in Medieval Narrative. By J. A. Burrow. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2002. Pp. xi + 200. $55.00.

John Burrow's book intends to reveal the significations of nonverbal communications (NVCs) in a broad range of medieval texts. The introductory chapters are divided into two large categories, "Gestures " (Chap. 2) and "Looks " (Chap. 3). These are followed by another two chapters that provide detailed analyses of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Chap. 4) and Dante's Commedia (Chap. 5).
