Book Review

Volume 104 • Number 1

January 2005

Diu Crône and the Medieval Arthurian Cycle. By Neil Thomas. Arthurian Studies, 50. Cambridge: D. S. Brewer, 2002, Pp. 152. $70.

The title of his book indicates that Neil Thomas intends to discuss Diu Crône within the context of the European medieval Arthurian tradition, which he does fairly effectively. This volume, the fiftieth in the series of Arthurian Studies, is neatly divided into six chapters. In his introduction Thomas identifies the central problem: because of the high number of intertexts in Diu Crône, critics have tended to view it as a compilation rather than as an integrated text. Aware that his audience may not be familiar with Diu Crône, he provides a brief plot summary.
