The fourteen essays here published are based on lectures given at a conference in September 2005 at the Freie Universität Berlin under the auspices of the Sonderforschungbereich "Kulturen des Performativen." the focus of the conference was on medieval sacred drama, primarily from German-speaking Europe, a focus found in eleven of the papers; the final three take up visual and musical problems associated with Italian culture of the baroque, and contemporary, "experimental" theater as a locus of "transformationen des Religiösen."
